PORTLAND, OREGON – Despite facing fierce opposition from a significant portion of the team’s fan base, the Portland Timbers have appointed Phil Neville as their new head coach. Neville, a former England women’s national team manager and current assistant coach for the Canadian men’s national team, has signed a contract with the MLS club that will run until the end of the 2026 season.
Neville’s appointment has been met with vocal disapproval from the Timbers Army, the club’s prominent supporters’ group. The group has expressed concerns over Neville’s past social media comments about women, which they deem to be “sexist and offensive.”
In a statement released over the weekend, the Timbers Army urged the club to reconsider their decision, stating: “We are deeply disappointed that the club has reportedly settled on a finalist for a head coach who has a history of sexist public statements that run counter to our ethos as a club, city and supporters’ group, and who also lack a proven track record as a manager.”
Neville has acknowledged his past remarks and expressed regret for their offensive nature. He has stated that the comments do not reflect his current beliefs or values.
Despite the controversy surrounding his appointment, Neville brings a wealth of experience to the Timbers organization. He has a proven record of success in women’s football, having led England to a bronze medal at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. He also has experience in the MLS, having coached Inter Miami from 2021 until his dismissal in June 2023.
The Timbers Army’s concerns are understandable, and it remains to be seen how Neville will address these issues and gain the trust of the fans. His success as head coach will depend not only on his tactical acumen but also on his ability to unite the club and foster a positive and inclusive environment for all.
